Wrinkles and What to Do About Them

Wrinkles are the lines, creases and folds that form on the skin over time. Some wrinkles may become deep crevices and can be particularly noticeable around the eyes and mouth, and on the forehead and neck.  Fortunately there are many alternatives available to help combat unwanted wrinkles.

  • Aging

The skin normally loses its elasticity as people age. The body begins producing fewer natural oils which dries out the skin and leaves more obvious wrinkles and lines.  There is also less fat in the deeper layers of the skin and this can lead to loose, saggy skin and wrinkles.

  • Sun Exposure

Exposure to the sun and ultraviolet (UV) light is the number one cause of premature wrinkles. UV light damages the skin’s connective tissue and breaks it down. The absence of the supportive connective tissue makes skin less strong and causes it to wrinkle and sag.

  • Habitual Facial Expressions

Repeated facial expressions like smiling can ultimately produce fine lines and wrinkles. As skin gets older and becomes less flexible it can no longer bounce back into place, and any creases created may become permanent.

  • Smoking

Smoking can also lead to premature aging of the skin. This is because the nicotine in cigarettes can diminish blood supply to the skin, and it doesn’t get the oxygen and other important nutrients it needs.

Also, the facial expressions smokers tend to make like pursing their lips when inhaling and keeping smoke out of the eyes by squinting may increase the likelihood of wrinkles.

  • Botox

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure. Approximately 6.3 million people received Botox injections in 2013. Botox is used to treat the lines that appear when people laugh, frown or smile, but it cannot help improve the appearance of loose or saggy skin.  Botox injections typically last for four to six months.

  • Fillers

Fillers are another non-surgical procedure and also injected in the skin. They are used to help smooth wrinkles by raising or filling out lines and creases.  Fillers are also not permanent and usually go away over time.

  • Facelift

facelift is a comprehensive surgical procedure that can remove unwanted wrinkles and deep creases by tightening the skin on the face. The results of a facelift are much longer lasting than non-surgical procedures like Botox and filler injections.
