What to Expect from Laser Hair Removal

We use the Adept Ultra Wave II to remove unwanted hair from all skin types. Are you tired of constantly shaving, waxing, or plucking unwanted hair from your body? Laser hair removal can help eliminate hair from virtually any part of the body, even from sensitive areas like the bikini zone or from large areas like the chest or back. Here’s what to expect.

PREPARING FOR TREATMENT

It’s a good idea to meet with your laser hair removal provider before actually committing to the treatment. This will help ensure you’re choosing a quality facility that will be able to provide effective hair removal in a safe manner. You can also get advice about the type of results you can expect to see based on your hair and skin type. If you decide to go forward with the treatment, you’ll need to prepare by avoiding tanning and allowing your hair to grow for a few weeks before treatment.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING TREATMENT

During a laser hair removal treatment, an experienced technician will pass the laser over your skin to direct the light into the hair follicles. The pigment within the hair absorbs the light, which damages the hair follicle to the point where it can’t grow back. The more pigment the hair has compared to the skin, the more light will be absorbed and the more effective the treatment will be. This makes people with fair skin and dark hair the best candidates for laser hair removal. However, our equipment features two different light wavelengths to target light or dark hair and is proven effective on all hair and skin types, so don’t assume laser hair removal won’t work for you.

HOW IT FEELS

Most people describe the sensation of laser hair removal as something like a small pinch or a light snap from a rubber band. If you are concerned about sensitivity, we can apply a topical anesthetic to the area to numb skin before treatment.

ONCE YOU GO HOME

After a laser hair removal treatment, you should avoid exposing your skin to the sun or to irritants like chlorine because the treatment leaves hair follicles open for a few days. After about 10 days, you’ll be able to actually pull out some hairs easily and without any pain. You may want to use an exfoliating scrub to help the process of losing the hair along.

WHY YOU HAVE TO COME BACK

Laser hair removal is only effective on hair that is in the active growth phase. Hairs that are in the resting phase or transitional phase will not be affected. Therefore, you need to keep coming back for additional treatments until all the hair has been treated in the growth phase. Typically treatments are scheduled at 4 to 6 week intervals and you may need a total of 3 to 6 treatments depending on your hair and skin type.

LONG-TERM RESULTS

Roughly 90 percent of patients experience some degree of permanent hair loss after 3 laser hair removal treatments. However, results will vary from patient to patient.
