Gynecomastia is a condition that causes men to develop enlarged breasts. It can occur at any age and usually results from obesity, hormonal changes, or heredity. Certain medications can also cause this condition to develop. It can cause a lack of self-confidence, and some men even avoid physical activities because of this condition. When cases of gynecomastia are severe, the excess fat can cause the skin around the breasts to stretch and sag. The condition is typically associated with:
- Excessive localized fat
- Excess breast skin
- Over-development of glandular tissue
What Can Be Done to Treat Gynecomastia?
Many men who suffer from this condition choose to undergo gynecomastia surgery. This surgery significantly reduces the size of the breasts to reveal a more flattering and masculine chest contour.
The best candidates for the procedure are men who have not been able to correct the condition through alternative treatments. Ideal candidates should also be in good health and nonsmokers, and it is important to have a positive outlook with realistic goals about the outcome of the procedure. Adolescents who have this condition can also benefit from this surgery, but there are times when a secondary procedure is necessary if breast tissue continues to develop into adulthood.
The procedure is performed by Dr. Mirrafati right in our office. Prior to the procedure, you should make arrangements to have someone drive you home when you are discharged, and it is also helpful to have someone stay with you the first night after the surgery.
After you are given anesthesia, our doctor will perform the surgery through a liposuction technique or an excision technique. There are times when the procedure is administered using both techniques. After the procedure, it is important to follow all of the aftercare instructions given to you by our doctor. You may be given a compression garment to speed healing.
