Will Insurance Cover My Breast Reduction, and How Do I Find Out?
Insurance often covers breast reduction when it's medically necessary, meaning your large breasts are causing documented physical symptoms like chronic back pain, neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, skin rashes under the breast fold, or numbness in your hands. The key word is "documented." You'll need records from your primary care doctor showing you've tried conservative treatments like physical therapy, prescription pain medication, or supportive bras, and that those haven't resolved your symptoms. I help my Mission Viejo and Laguna area patients navigate this process. We submit a predetermination letter with clinical photos, measurements, and your symptom history. Insurance criteria vary by carrier, but generally they want to see that a minimum amount of tissue will be removed relative to your body surface area.
What Breast Reduction Surgery Involves
I remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, then reshape the remaining tissue into a smaller, lifted breast. The nipple is moved to a higher, more natural position. It stays attached to its blood supply the entire time, so sensation is usually preserved. I've performed over 8,000 breast surgeries, and breast reduction is one of the most satisfying procedures I do because the relief patients feel is immediate. Women who've lived with heavy, painful breasts for years walk out of recovery already noticing the difference in their back and shoulders.
What Size Will I Be After Surgery?
We discuss this in detail during your consultation. I'll ask what cup size you're hoping to achieve and show you implant sizers so you can visualize the proportion on your frame. Most patients go from a DD, DDD, or larger down to a full C or small D. My goal is a size that looks proportional to your body and eliminates your symptoms while giving you a shape you love. I won't make you smaller than you want to be, and I won't leave you bigger than what will relieve your pain.
Recovery for Active South County Patients
Plan for one to two weeks off work. No lifting anything over five pounds for four weeks. No running or high-impact exercise for six weeks. For my Laguna Beach patients who hike, swim, or do yoga, light activity resumes at three to four weeks. Full activity at six weeks. You'll be amazed at how much easier physical activity is when you're not carrying excess breast weight.
