I Work Out Every Day and My Stomach Still Pooches Out. Can a Tummy Tuck Actually Fix That?
Yes, and here's why your workouts aren't working. If your ab muscles separated during pregnancy (a condition called diastasis recti), no amount of crunches will close that gap. The muscles have literally split apart along the midline. That gap creates a bulge that looks like belly fat but is actually your organs pushing forward through weakened muscle. I repair that separation during a tummy tuck by suturing the muscles back together with permanent internal stitches. Once they're repaired, you'll actually have a flat stomach for the first time since before your pregnancies. I see this regularly in Irvine patients who are genuinely fit but can't get a flat midsection. It's frustrating because the fix is structural, not something diet and exercise can address. I have published a medical textbook about tummy tuck.
Mini vs. Full Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck addresses only the area below the belly button. It's a shorter incision, less recovery, and works for patients with a small amount of loose skin and no muscle separation above the navel. A full tummy tuck goes from hip to hip, tightens the muscles from ribcage to pubic bone, removes all the excess skin, and repositions the belly button. Most of my post-pregnancy patients need the full version. I'd love to offer everyone the mini because it's an easier sell, but I won't recommend it if it won't give you the result you're after. Doing a mini when you need a full just means you'll be back for a revision.
The Mira Mist Advantage
I developed the Mira Mist technique to reduce post-operative swelling and bruising. For tummy tucks, this translates to a more comfortable recovery. My patients consistently tell me their recovery was easier than the horror stories they read online. You'll still need two weeks before you feel functional and six weeks before heavy exercise. But the worst of it is the first five days, and with the Mira Mist approach, even those are more manageable.
