Do I Need a Breast Lift, Implants, or Both?
This is the question I hear most from Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley patients who are unhappy with how their breasts look after kids or weight changes. Here's a simple way to think about it. If your nipples point downward or sit below your breast crease, you need a lift. If your breasts have lost volume and look deflated, you might need implants. If both things are happening, which is common after breastfeeding, you need a lift with implants. I can sort this out in about 30 seconds during an exam. I have done more than 8,000 breast surgeries and the odds are, I probably seen and operated on your breast shape.
What a Breast Lift Does
I reposition the nipple back up to where it should be, remove excess skin, and reshape the breast tissue to create a rounder, perkier contour. The scars depend on how much lifting you need. A minor lift can be done with a scar just around the areola. Moderate sagging needs a lollipop incision that goes around the areola and straight down. Significant sagging requires the anchor pattern with a horizontal scar under the breast fold. I've done over 8,000 breast surgeries, and I always use the least scarring necessary to get a good result.
The Surfing and Beach Concern
Huntington Beach patients always ask when they can get back in the water. For the ocean, I want you to wait at least four weeks, and six weeks is better. Salt water and incisions don't mix well during early healing. You can shower normally after three days. Swimming pools at six weeks, once the incisions are fully sealed. And yes, you can surf again. The implants, if used, are placed securely and won't shift with paddling or wave impacts once they're healed.
