I've Lost Weight but My Inner Thighs Still Touch and Chafe. What Are My Options?
First, congratulations on the weight loss. That takes real discipline. The problem you're describing is common after significant weight loss. The fat is gone but the skin that stretched to accommodate it is still there. No amount of squats or leg presses will tighten loose inner thigh skin. Your options depend on how much excess skin you have. If it's moderate, liposuction with a minor skin excision can help. If there's a lot of excess, a full thigh lift is the answer. I see patients from Bellflower, South Gate, Lynwood, and Bell Gardens who worked incredibly hard to lose 50, 60, or 80 pounds and are frustrated that their thighs still don't look the way they want. The skin needs surgical help to catch up with the weight loss.
Thigh Liposuction vs. Thigh Lift
Liposuction removes fat. A thigh lift removes skin. Some patients need both. If your skin still has good elasticity (usually younger patients or those who lost a moderate amount of weight), liposuction alone can give you a great contour and the skin will retract. If the skin hangs or folds, we need to physically remove it. The thigh lift scar goes in the groin crease for an inner thigh lift, which is hidden by underwear. I'll recommend the least invasive option that will actually give you a good result.
Recovery and Activity
Liposuction recovery is about one to two weeks. A full thigh lift is two to three weeks before you're comfortable walking normally. Compression garments for four to six weeks. I want you walking from day one to keep circulation moving, but no heavy leg exercise for six weeks. For patients who are on their feet for work, plan for at least a week off with lipo, two weeks with a lift.
