Are Spider Veins Just a Cosmetic Problem, or Could They Be a Health Issue?
Most spider veins are cosmetic. They look bad but they're not dangerous. However, sometimes spider veins are a sign of underlying venous insufficiency, which means the valves in your deeper leg veins aren't working properly. If your spider veins come with leg aching, swelling after long days on your feet, or a heavy, tired feeling in your legs, those are signs we need to look deeper. I see patients from Bellflower, South Gate, Lynwood, and Bell Gardens who are on their feet all day for work. Construction, retail, warehouse jobs. Years of standing takes a toll on the veins. I always check for deeper issues before treating the surface veins because clearing spider veins without addressing an underlying problem is like mopping a wet floor without fixing the leak.
How We Treat Spider Veins
Sclerotherapy is the primary treatment. I inject a solution into each visible spider vein. The solution irritates the vein wall, causing it to collapse and seal shut. Your body reroutes the blood through healthier veins and absorbs the treated ones over a few weeks. The needles are tiny. It stings briefly. No anesthesia needed. A typical session treats 20 to 40 veins and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Most patients need two to three sessions, spaced a month apart, for full clearance.
What to Expect After Treatment
You walk out of the office and go about your day. No bed rest, no restrictions on work. I recommend wearing compression stockings for three to five days. Some patients see mild bruising or darkening along the treated veins. That's normal and fades over a few weeks. The veins themselves take two to six weeks to fully disappear. Don't judge the result until at least four weeks after treatment.
