I Have a Round Face Even Though I'm at a Healthy Weight. Is Buccal Fat the Reason?
Probably, yes. The buccal fat pad sits deep in your cheeks and is genetically determined. It's separate from the fat you can lose with diet and exercise. Some people have larger buccal fat pads, which gives them a round, "chubby" appearance even when they're thin. I hear this all the time from patients in South Gate, Bell Gardens, and the surrounding cities. They'll say something like, "I weigh 120 pounds and people still tell me I have a baby face." That's the buccal fat. Removing it creates more visible cheekbones and a slimmer facial contour. It's a permanent change that makes your natural bone structure show through.
This Procedure Is Not for Every Face
Here's where I differ from some providers. I will not do buccal fat removal on a patient whose face is already lean. If you have naturally thin cheeks, removing buccal fat will make you look gaunt and aged within five to ten years. I evaluate your facial structure carefully. If you have full cheeks with a rounded lower face, good skin elasticity, and are at or near your ideal weight, you're a good candidate. If you're already slim-faced or over 45, I'll likely suggest fillers for definition instead of removal.
No Visible Scars, Quick Recovery
The incision is inside your mouth. No one will see a scar. The procedure takes 30 to 45 minutes under local anesthesia. Recovery is two to three days of mild swelling and a soft food diet. Most patients are back at work on day three. Dissolvable stitches handle themselves. The final slimmed-down contour shows at about the two to three month mark.
