A breast lift raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. A breast lift can enhance your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted. A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their shape and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, gravity and heredity.
A breast lift cannot make the breast larger, but it can lift the breast up and reposition the nipple. Many women experience the areola becoming enlarged over time, and a breast lift can reduce this as well. If the patient wants a fuller breast, an implant or fat transfer will be necessary.
During the consultation the patient can expect for Dr. Mirrafati to take measurements to determine how low the nipple is and where it should be. He will also note how much excess skin there is and how much of it needs to be removed. A complete medical history and a careful examination will be performed including blood work to determine the general health of the patient. During the consultation photographs will be taken to compare the before and after in order to evaluate the improvement achieved.
Prior to the surgery Dr. Mirrafati will discuss the procedure, realistic expectations, the type of anesthesia that will be used and the possible risks of surgery. Preoperative instructions generally include taking certain vitamins and the elimination of certain drugs such as birth control pills to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding. Furthermore, antibiotics may be prescribed for the days prior to surgery in order to prevent infection. Women who anticipate breast-feeding should also discuss this with the doctor since the ability to do this can vary with each individual after surgery.
A breast lift is generally performed at our outpatient surgical facility under general anesthesia or IV sedation. After the surgery the patient is usually allowed to go home. A surgical dressing is placed to protect the incisions and a supportive bra may be required for the first three weeks. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. The breasts may be swollen and bruised for the first few days and any pain experienced can be controlled with oral medication. Healing is gradual, and although light activity can be resumed within a few days, routine exercising and vigorous activity should be avoided until specified by the doctor.
With any surgical procedure risk including bleeding and infection can occur. At Mira Aesthetic Medical Center we will inform you of the potential risks and advice you to adhere to doctors orders. The decision to have plastic surgery is extremely personal and only you can weight the potential risks and benefits of surgery.
