A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure meant to change your breast size with either a breast implant or by using your own fatty tissue. Many women experience the loss of volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or have little breast tissue to begin with. Breast implants are either made of saline or silicone gel and come in various proportions. At Mira Aesthetic Medical Center we want to make sure you’re fully informed on the type of breast implants available. When looking into silicone or gel implants one of the most popular is the Gummy Bear implant. The silicone gel in the Gummy Bear implant is a bit firmer and holds its shape better compared to the traditional silicone implant. Dr. Mirrafati will discuss the different options available, always taking into account your anatomy and needs. No matter what implant you decide to choose, our end goal is for you to feel your best.
The Mira Mist technique is a procedure developed by Dr. Mirrafati and exclusively performed at the Mira Aesthetic Medical Center. The Mira Mist technique consists of creating a small incision in the armpit fold to insert the breast implant therefore creating minimal scarring. The areola remains intact and because the incisions are much smaller and in the armpit fold, recovery time is faster. During your consultation ask about the Mira Mist technique and with Dr. Mirrafati’s guidance decide if this is the right option for you.
During your consultation, you’ll have the opportunity to talk about your personal goals. Dr. Mirrafati will discuss his recommendations on what size and type of implant is suitable for your frame and aesthetic goals. A complete medical history and a careful examination will be performed including blood work to determine the general health of the patient. During the consultation photographs will be taken to compare the before and after in order to evaluate the outcome.
Prior to surgery Dr. Mirrafati will discuss the procedure, realistic expectations, the type of anesthesia that will be used and the possible risks of surgery. Preoperative instructions generally include taking certain vitamins and the elimination of certain drugs such as birth control pills to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding. Furthermore, antibiotics may be prescribed for the days prior to surgery in order to prevent infection. Women who anticipate breast-feeding should also discuss this with the doctor since the ability to do this can vary with each individual after surgery.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. In the case an implant leaks, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. Saline breast implants provide a uniform shape, firmness and feel, and are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 18 or older.
Structured Saline Breast Implants
Structured Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water, and contain an inner structure, which aims to make the implant feel more natural.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. The gel feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant casing, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel will not collapse. If you choose silicone implants, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly. Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 22 and older.
Gummy Bear Breast Implants
Form-stable implants are sometimes referred to as Gummy Bear breast implants because they maintain their shape even when the implant shell is broken. The consistency of the silicone gel inside the implant is thicker than traditional silicone gel implants. These implants are also firmer than traditional implants. Shaped gummy bear breast implants have more projection at the bottom and are tapered towards the top. This makes the Gummy Bear implant a very popular option for women that want a natural appearance.
A breast augmentation is generally performed at our outpatient surgical facility under general anesthesia or IV sedation. After the surgery the patient is usually allowed to go home. A surgical dressing is placed to protect the incisions and a supportive bra may be required for the first three weeks. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. The breasts may be swollen and bruised for the first few days and any pain experienced can be controlled with oral medication. Healing is gradual, and although light activity can be resumed within a few days, routine exercising and vigorous activity should be avoided until specified by the doctor.
With any surgical procedure risk including bleeding and infection can occur. At Mira Aesthetic Medical Center we will inform you of the potential risks and advice you to adhere to doctors orders. The decision to have plastic surgery is extremely personal and only you can weigh the potential risks and benefits of surgery.
The cost of a breast augmentation varies depending on several factors. The average price ranges from $3,900 and can increase depending on the type of implant chosen.
