A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that can help eliminate excess fat and sagging skin on the abdomen. It can potentially correct weakened and separated abdominal muscles. Dr. Mirrafati created a method called corset plasty that helps create a more hourglass figure, not just a flatter stomach for a more harmonious figure. A tummy tuck may be necessary if diet and exercise are not enough to reach a person’s aesthetic goals. A person may decide on a tummy tuck after having had significant weight loss or for women after having children. Although a tummy tuck is a permanent surgical procedure, keep in mind you can always alter your results by fluctuating in your weight. Stretch marks cannot be corrected with a tummy tuck but can potentially be eliminated if they are located where the excess skin is to be removed.
During your consultation, Dr. Mirrafati will discuss your personal goals and will do a full examination. An action plan focusing on your abdominal area will be discussed and agreed on. A complete medical history and a careful examination will be performed including blood work to determine the general health of the patient. During the consultation photographs will be taken to compare the before and after and evaluate the outcome.
Prior to the surgery Dr. Mirrafati will discuss the procedure, realistic expectations, the type of anesthesia that will be used and the possible risks of surgery. Preoperative instructions generally include taking certain vitamins and the elimination of certain drugs such as birth control pills to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding. Furthermore, antibiotics may be prescribed for the days prior to surgery in order to prevent infection.
A tummy tuck is generally performed at our outpatient surgical facility under general anesthesia or IV sedation. After the surgery the patient is usually allowed to go home. A surgical dressing is placed to protect the incisions. Oral medications will be prescribed to reduce the risk of infection. Healing is gradual and although light activity can be resumed shortly after, routine exercising and vigorous activity should be avoided until specified by the doctor.
With any surgical procedure risk including bleeding and infection can occur. At Mira Aesthetic Medical Center we will inform you of the potential risks and advise you to adhere to doctors orders. The decision to have plastic surgery is extremely personal and only you can weigh the potential risks and benefits of surgery.
