A labiaplasty procedure focuses on decreasing the size of the labia minor a (inner tissues of the female genitalia) so that it is flush with the labia major a (outer part of the female genitalia). This surgical procedure utilizes several techniques depending on the patient’s specific situation. Women who decide to have a labiaplasty do so to decrease the pain or discomfort from having excess skin. The main difference between a labiaplasty and another treatment under the “vaginal rejuvenation” umbrella is a labiaplasty is a surgical procedure.
During your consultation, Dr. Mirrafati will discuss your personal goals and will do a full examination. A complete medical history and a careful examination will be performed including blood work to determine the general health of the patient. During the consultation photographs will be taken to compare the before and after and evaluate the outcome.
Prior to the surgery Dr. Mirrafati will discuss the procedure, realistic expectations, the type of anesthesia that will be used and the possible risks of surgery. Preoperative instructions generally include taking certain vitamins and the elimination of certain drugs such as birth control pills to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding. Furthermore, antibiotics may be prescribed for the days prior to surgery in order to prevent infection.
A labiaplasty is generally performed at our outpatient surgical facility under general anesthesia or IV sedation. After the surgery the patient is usually allowed to go home. Recovery instructions will be discussed and oral medications will be prescribed to reduce the risk of infection. Healing is gradual and although light activity can be resumed shortly after, routine exercising and vigorous activity should be avoided until specified by the doctor.
